Review: Plantronics BackBeat 505

First Impression: Meh

Taking this out of the box felt like taking a toy out. It feels cheap and shoddily built. The headphones itself is lightweight but the feel of rubber and plastic makes it seems like it’ll break after using it for several months. I’ve definitely had headphones that have a better built at a cheaper price point. The review unit given to us had yellowing edges, and the headphones feels tacky. Might be a good indication of how this pair of headphones stand up against wear and tear over time. There are button controls on the side of the headphones, which makes it convenient, but sometimes it might not register a click or the reaction might be prolonged.

Ohhh…Comfy

Build quality aside, this is one seriously comfy pair of headphones. With it being lightweight, this headphones is comfy to wear all day, without discomfort or feeling the weight. The headphones allows for wireless Bluetooth connection, as well as an option for wired connection – so it’s definitely convenient and portable for daily work and commute. It boasts 18 hours of battery life, so you can go all day without charging it. The Bluetooth connection does take some time to connect though. Both on my phone and laptop it took several tries before the headphones were visible to either device.

No Noise Cancelling

This isn’t a noise cancelling headphones. After testing so many headphones with noise cancelling function, whether active or passive, it was a bit disappointing to put on the headphones that doesn’t immediately blocks off some of the ambient noise. In fact it sounds no different after putting on the headphones. However, once the music gets going (at moderate volume level), you can barely hear much of the ambient sounds. (Tested at around 30% of max volume, aggregated across device, headphone and app volume).  Plus points to a longer Bluetooth signal range compared to many other headphones I’ve tested, even across different rooms.

Bass Bass Bass

Despite all its shortcomings, the sound quality of this headphone is quite decent for its price point. It is very much heavier on the bass, but overall the music quality is clear. For music that favours a heavier bass, these headphones does wonders and gives a great balance. For music that are less focused on bass, it falls a bit short. the highs and the mids are slightly lacking and dulls in comparison to the amazing bass that this headphones can produce. Classical music for instance, you will get a huge imbalance where the base notes seems much more boosted over the melodies and accompaniments.
