Intel Sinks Teeth Into Data Centres, Acquires Barefoot Networks

Intel is providing its customers data centre interconnects that can keep pace with their extraordinary and growing requirements. And this is why the chip maker made interconnect as one of its six technology pillars in which its investing heavily on.

This has led to Intel making a significant purchase of Barefoot Networks, an emerging leader in Ethernet switch silicon and software for use in the data center, specialising in the programmability and flexibility necessary to meet the performance and ever-changing needs of the hyperscale cloud. The addition of Barefoot Networks will support its focus on end-to-end cloud networking and infrastructure leadership, and will allow Intel to deliver on new workloads, experiences and capabilities for data center customers.

The newly acquired company will add deep expertise in cloud network architectures, P4-programmable high-speed data paths, switch silicon development, P4 compilers, driver software, network telemetry and computational networking. Importantly, Intel will also be gaining one of the most talented and experienced teams in this domain in the industry.
