So, Samsung has dished another winner this this year and is calling it Galaxy S8, the S series are reserved for the premium while the Galaxy nomenclature is used across the smartphone and tablet base. Every S range model that is released out triumphs the other, in this years edition Samsung introduced Infinity Display on the S8, a screen that’s 18% larger from the S7 model yet retains the overall phone size. So what did the engineers at Seoul headquarters actually do?

Going bezel-less is the ultimate goal – there are already other phones in the market with this design, Such as the LG G6, the Sharp Aquos Crystal, or even the Xiaomi Mi Mix.  These phones are designed to maximise display area in the smallest body possible – giving users that extra viewing space. What we hear today from Sammy is nothing new nor revolutionary, it’s just clever marketing.
The engineers did not do much; the designers were the ones who got the upper hand this time around. There are only so much hardware leaps one can pack into a mobile device, apart from processor speeds and RAM. Battery is a taboo subject for now, and there is no new technology that can offer unlimited power supply without a recharge.

But all is not dull on the S8 – it does look stunning and realising the future are applications rather than hardware; a couple of interesting features has been incorporated into the new device, which we shall touch on in later episodes.

Optimised for Entertainment

On the Galaxy S8, 21:9 movies should fill the 18.5:9 display when watching in landscape mode, while the black bars above and below the picture are minimized, increasing the viewing area by 36% than its predecessor. The phone’s High Dynamic Range capabilities, will enable users to see content exactly as intended; gaming will be a tad more fun as any games that supports the feature will automatically fill up the entire screen, giving a more immersive gaming experience.

Being larger in screen size has its advantages – it now becomes easier to see and do more from a single screen when the device is optimised for multi-window usability. Multitasking is now possible even with the phone’s full keyboard on display. Snap Window feature allows users to pin a specific area from a recent app to the top of the screen, and continue using the area below it. While the others do have larger display, Samsung has cleverly optimised it to the max. Infinity Display is protected with the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which is said to be impervious against scratches and external impacts.

Would I get one myself just on the main selling feature of the display? I’m not sold just yet!
