*Yes I know I’m not the only one who will come up with that title. I’m not very creative without coffee. 

LG showed off their new LG G6. Here’s what you need to know:

• They love the tag line “a big screen that actually fits on your hand”
• They focus a lot on the display.
• They took a mild jab at exploding batteries

The G6 is LG’s answer to people’s wish list for what they want on a phone – big screen, smaller body, waterproof, “capture all at once”, reliable.

Since they love their display, let’s start with that. It’s a bit different from its peers – so the aspect ratio is 18:9 – or 2:1 in simpler terms. Slightly longer than conventional 16:9. So yes it’s a bigger screen, 5.7 inch QHD+ FullVision display, which will not seem like a giant close to a phablet. It’s not quite bezel-less, but very narrow bezels, the upper bezel was minimized by rearranging the camera, sensor and speaker in a row on the front upper side.

The unique aspect ratio means you basically can fit 2 squares on the phone and LG is capitalising on that in their Square Camera Mode. So it takes 1:1 ratio square photos (“ideal for Instagram”). Other aspect ratios available for setting. The Square modes also mean you can multitask – like shoot photos in one and edit in the other.

Camera wise there’s standard and wide angle lenses, coming in at 13MP rear with 125 degree lens for wide angle, reducing edge distortion. Front camera is a slightly less impressive 5MP with 100 degree field of view. Zooming in and out between wide and standard lens is made seamless, even in 4K video.

LG likes being the first for this phone, bringing Dolby Vision – yes the stuff for TVs – on to a phone. The display supports HDR 10, the standards for HDR, bringing clearer and more vivid pictures. It’s a bit like a mini cinema on your screen.

The G6 body is aluminium and glass, comes in 3 colours – Ice Platinum, Astro Black, Mystic White – with a metal frame. Flat back with no camera protrusions, the phone is designed with rounded corners to minimise the chances of broken glass, dispersing the impact if the phone is dropped.

Certified IP68 water and dust resistance, it’s safe to be immersed in up to 1.5 meters of water for as long as 30 minutes. They also took a mild jab at other manufacturer’s battery issue, stating that they are definitely safe. In more detailed, LG uses a proprietary technology that dissipates heat via an internal heat pipe. And to further disperse heat, they don’t put all the prone to heating elements together – in fact they put them as far from each other as possible.

LG G6 will be one of the lucky phones to get Google Assistant built in, first introduced along with the Google Pixel.

So you get a G6 Game Collection promotion – in-game content with a retail value of up to a total of US$200 for six games – Temple Run 2, Spider-Man Unlimited, Crossy Road, SimCity BuildIt, Cookie Jam and Genies & Gems – on Google Play, all for free.
