After a packed keynote from Microsoft for Xbox One, it’s now Sony’s turn to rumble. This year’s keynote was rather tame and focused for the PlayStation 4 console. Even so, we got to see plenty of high-profile and great games. Here’s an overview of the main shows at the conference.
The Last of Us Part II
We knew The Last of Us was coming back, and that it would star Ellie instead of Joel. Apart from cinematic cuts, there was little else known about the game. The keynote kicks of with The Last of Us Part II’s first gameplay trailer. It opens with a calm and tender sequence, but immediately cuts to Ellie knee-deep in enemy territory. The trailer is 12 minutes long of and shows off some interesting mechanics, like pulling an arrow out from your shoulder and lying prone underneath vehicles.
Ghost of Tsushima
After a brief intermission, the conference throws us onto the beautiful but ravaged island of Tsushima. Set in 1274, Jin Sakai is one of the last survivors of a noble samurai clan. He undertakes the way of The Ghost to fend off overwhelming odds as the Mongol Empire invades his homeland. The trailer treats us to powerful visuals as Jin wades through swaying paddies and even duels amidst raging fire.
Control
From the creators of Alan Wake and Quantum Break, you play as Jesse Faden, a young woman with a troubled past. She becomes the new Director of the Bureau of Control, a frontline in researching and fighting against supernatural enemies. The trailer itself is a little surreal, but we do get to see Jesse show off some interesting powers as she tries to survive the shifting halls of the Bureau.
Resident Evil 2 (Remake)
When ideas for a remake of Resident Evil 2 first began to swirl in 2015, it was nothing more than a Facebook post gauging interest. Even the announcement was uncharacteristically informal, with producer Yoshiaki Hirabyashi appearing in a short clip to deliver the news. Contrary to that vibe, Resident Evil 2 Remake looks like a total revamp of the classic PlayStation game, with new visuals, an over-the-shoulder camera, and modernised controls. We also get a release date for 25th January 2019.
Trover Saves the Universe
Introducing Squanch Games’ first full-length sci-fi action comedy adventure, coming to PS4 and PSVR. Your dogs have been dognapped by a beaked lunatic called Glorkon, who stuffed them into his eye holes and is using their life essence to destroy the universe. Partnering with Trevor, you must track down Glorkon, and save your dogs (and the Universe).
Kingdom Hearts III
This marks the third time that Kingdom Hearts III has appeared at an E3 conference. While the earlier two revealed the Disney worlds of Frozen and Ratatouille, this one has Sora and friends join Captain Jack Sparrow from The Pirates of the Caribbean. The Unreal Engine 4 shows its potential here as the game spends seemingly no effort in shifting to more realistic visuals. We also get a few more story hints, but they’re admittedly still confusing for me. Kingdom Hearts III is set to launch on 25th January 2019 in Japan and Asia, and 29th January 2019 in North America and Europe.
Death Stranding
Besieged by death’s tide at every turn, Sam Bridges must brave a world utterly transformed by the Death Stranding. In true Kojima fashion, the trailer we get for Death Stranding is a montage that’s equally long as it is meaningful. Apart from seeing Norman Reedus go through the same routine and struggles of making deliveries in a hauntingly empty world, it also reveals Lea Seydoux and Lindsay Wagner as the two heroines of the game.
Nioh 2
Joining Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Ghost of Tsushima is an announcement of Nioh 2. This marks three games at E3 2018 centring around feudal Japan settings. The historical Japanese game (that’s also about cutting down Youkai) was only teased at Sony’s event with a short, cinematic cut. The first Nioh featured Team Ninja’s own take on Souls-like gameplay. It made use of in-depth RPG customisation, Diablo loot, and tight action mechanics and became Koei Tecmo’s most commercially successful game in the West.
Marvel’s Spider-Man
The final highlight of the conference features everyone’s favorite web-slinger. Although Peter Parker is a seasoned superhero in this title, this trailer shows off how the stakes can still be taken to dangerous levels for Spider-Man. It begins with him trying to stop villain Electro from breaking criminals out from prison. What starts as a simple job quickly escalates as villains like Rhino and Scorpion break free. It ends with a teaser that, yes, Spider-Man will go up against the Sinister Six. The game comes out on 7th September 2018.
With the Sony press conference done with, our next and final keynote to look at will be Nintendo’s. You can catch the live stream on 12th June, 11:59pm GMT+8 over at Nintendo’s website, YouTube, and Twitch.
