Microsoft took the curtains off their take on Chrome OS called Windows 10 S. Microsoft touts it to be the “soul” of Windows, streamlined for simplicity, security and superior performance.

Windows 10S is basically like Chrome OS, where you can only run applications downloaded from the Windows Store. Windows 10 S is noted and demonstrated during launch with a faster login time and consistent performance. It’s noted to boot up within 15 seconds for first login, with subsequent logins clocking about 5 seconds.

While you can run any browser, Windows focused on their Edge browser, bringing a new Tab Preview Bar where you can group tabs and easily find the tabs you need.

Other features include administration and management. Taking a page out of their enterprise offering, Microsoft Intune for Education allows a single panel view of devices and management of permissions. There’s also a Set Up School PC app in the Windows Store, enabling set up of entire classrooms of devices with customised experiences using a USB stick, in as little as 30 seconds per device.

Although you’re limited to downloading only approved apps from the store, if you want too download other apps you can switch to Windows 10 Pro where you can install anything.

Windows 10 S will be running on partner devices offering a range of new Windows 10 PCs for Education, including Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Samsung, and Toshiba  –  starting at $189.
