Microsoft finally dabbles into clamshell laptops with  – well, Surface Laptop.

The Surface Laptop is hailed to be a high quality device with an aluminium body and seamless design. Coming in at a slim 14.5mm thin weighing 2.76lbs, it’s designed to be lightweight and portable. The keyboard section sports fabric akin to the surface type covers – Alkantara, if you want to know the name.

Sporting a 13.5 inch Pixel Sense display with a 3:2 ratio, the edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is cramming in 3.4 million pixels. Powered by 7th gen core i5 or i7, the laptop also comes fitted with PCIe SSDs for up to 1TB, as well as boasting a battery life of 14.5 hours. Thing is, Microsoft is saying 14.5 hours not for light browsing, but for video playback.

Interestingly they’ve managed to fit the speakers behind the keyboard so you won’t be seeing any holes or grills for the speakers. Apart from boasting a long battery life, the battery is also optimised for when you’re not using your laptop. So you can you can go away for vacation and pick up right where you left off when you return.

Oh and you can integrate it with other gadgets like surface pen and surface dial.

The i5 model with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD starts with a price tag of USD$999, and is available for pre order now, shipping on 15th June. It comes in Burgundy, Platinum, Cobalt Blue and Graphite Gold.

Microsoft claims that it’s lighter and thinner than MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, as well as faster – Microsoft says it’s 50% faster than MacBook Air, as well as beating the i7 MacBook Pro in speed.

The Surface Laptop ships with Windows 10 S. Out of the box, the operating system can only run apps from the Windows Store, though it’s possible to upgrade it to a full Windows 10 Pro install for $50.
