US is investigating into allegations of ride sharing app Uber where staffs of its Indonesia operation were reported to have bribed police officers.

Department of Justice is reviewing Uber’s operation methods in Asia in whether they violated an anti-bribery law known as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act whereby the law bars US companies from paying bribes to foreign government officers to obtain business. It was stated that an employee paid off cops to allow Uber to set of their office outside city zoning for business, the staff has been fired since and the head of its operation in Indonesia suspended.

The ride hailing firm has also launched an internal investigation on offices in Malaysia, Korea, Singapore, China and India on similar matters. In Malaysia, it is alleged Uber donated huge sums to the government to influence the outcome of a ride hailing law which was passed in favour recently. Uber has a government linked company Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (KWAP) as one of its investors with US$30 million in investment which is also being reviewed by Uber’s law firm. It also participated in an entrepreneurship program organised by Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity (MAGIC) another government backed agency.

Investigation into the bribery has been on going and will take a few more months before any findings can be presented, Uber has been cooperative with DOJ and will be submitting its discoveries during the course of its internal probe.
