AGES (ASEAN Games for Esports) 2016 was supposed to be the culmination of eSports in Malaysia where the top teams from around Southeast Asia were to compete against one another for a share of the generous RM1,000,000 prize pool. With the backing of the Malaysian Ministry Youth & Sports, Ministry of Communications & Multimedia and the Ministry of Higher Education, AGES 2016 was the brainchild between Esports Malaysia (ESM) and organised by Platinum Eden Sdn. Bhd.
After a year since the event, the winners of AGES 2016 have yet to receive payments of any sorts as ESM and Platinum Eden have been involved with legal disputes over who was supposed to provide monetary payments to the winning teams and players. Even worse, international casters who were flown in to cast the event have not been paid, thus further throwing the event in more confusion.
For those who are not familiar, AGES was organised in partnership with various Malaysian government backings who are looking to market eSports into a viable opportunity for gamers in Malaysia looking to make a career out of it. The initiative also brought together various other organisations around Southeast Asia like the PeSO (Philippines eSports Organisation), SCOGA (Singaporean Cybersports and Online Gaming Association) and the IeSPA (Indonesian eSports Association).
As of right now, little is known as to what has happened with the prize money and who is directly responsible with paying out the winning teams. According to GosuGamers, other eSports organisations from neighbouring Asian countries had to pay its local players out of its own pocket in advance.
