Gone are his days of taking down mighty Greek gods as the Spartan demigod Kratos now clashes with Norse mythology; this time round it’s in the latest God of War for Sony PlayStation 4. The midnight release saw fans getting their hands on the long-awaited re-imagining of the iconic series.
A collaboration between Gamer’s Hideout and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the midnight launch event saw loads of fan turning up; the location, of course, had been at the Gamers’ Hideout Sunway Pyramid. Like all launch events, a myriad of activities and give-aways are available to all. As always, this is to engage gamers and the curious passer-bys.
These activities include archery and digital axe-throwing mini-games, quizzes, a ‘Be Kratos’ make-up booth, and a photo area.
For each passing hour, top scorers of the archery and axe-throwing games win exclusive prizes. First place receives a Funko Pop! figurine, featuring the Spartan demigod, Kratos, and his son, Atreus. Next, the runner-up wins a Sony PlayStation cap. The more sought after Sony PlayStation pouch is up for grabs at third place.
The hosts also did Q&A quizzes with fans, ranging from easy to tough ones for the hardcore. Some questions such as, “Who is Kratos’ father?” see enthusiastic responses from the crowd. But questions like, “Can you name the actor of Kratos?” garner hesitation as hardcore fans rise to the challenge.
At the make-up booth, fans get to ‘Be Kratos’ as his iconic war-markings are available for willing volunteers. Fans also pose and take pictures with the Spartan demigod Kratos’ signature axe weapon, the Leviathan.
At the stroke of midnight, the crowd reaches a fever pitch as the anticipated moment arrives. Minutes before that, fans are first treated to a special message; appearing in the video is Aaron Kaufman, Senior Online Community Strategist at SIE Santa Monica Studio. In his message, he thanks the fans for supporting God of War and Sony PlayStation; he also adds that God of War would not be around without them.
Indeed, this is a big kick-off for a SIE Studio game. As such, similar launch events took place around the world and in Bangkok as well.
God of War is now available worldwide on the Sony PlayStation 4 at all authorised Sony PlayStation dealers.
