Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra represents the pinnacle of smartphone tech. It features everything you could possibly want from a flagship device in 2020, albeit without the foldable screen. That being said, you’d think that the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra that you’ve bought would be the same as anyone else who’s purchased the device, right?
Wrong.
While it’s no secret that Samsung packs its own Exynos chipset under the hood for the Malaysian market and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon for some of its other markets, it turns out that Samsung are also experimenting with another aspect of the Note 20 Ultra. Discovered by the guys over at iFixit, it looks like Samsung are experimenting with a different cooling system for their phones.
During the teardown of the phone, the company found a multilayered graphite thermal pad underneath the devices motherboard. This could very well represent the future of cooling systems for Samsung devices, seeing as Samsung has stuck to copper heat pipes to cool its phones for a while now.
Originally, iFixit reckoned that this could be attributed to the difference between Snapdragon and Exynos variants but when JerryRigEverything dissected his Exynos equipped variant, he found a graphite thermal pad too. Given the lack of any reasonable explanation for the differences in the devices, it would seem that Samsung just fitted certain devices with the new cooling system as a means of testing out its effectiveness.
It’ll be interesting to see if the graphite thermal pad sticks around in Samsung’s upcoming releases. The company is known to experiment with new technology and far out innovations on it’s A series line of smartphones so perhaps we could be seeing a mass roll out of graphite cooling in the next generation of A series phones.
That being said though, this is all just speculation. Perhaps Samsung ran out of copper parts due to the Covid-19 pandemic or something? No one seems to know at this point. What do you think is going on here? Let us know in the comments!
