The iPhone 12 line-up could be the cheapest of all the iPhones and we could not be more excited about it. The news comes as Apple Insider Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple will be avoiding the massive price increases impacting rivals such as Samsung but with a few important reasons how and why.
In terms of balancing the costs, Apple will be shouldering more of a cost burden now that it has chosen to jump on the 5G Android bandwagon. This will increase Apple’s cost by $75 to $85 while the full fat milimeter wave 5G in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will add $125 to $135.
Such cost hikes already add $200 to $300 to the final retail price of phones like the Samsung’s Galaxy flagships, but Kuo says Apple will slash up to 50% of its battery costs by moving the iPhone 12 models to batteries with simpler and smaller designs with fewer layers.
Which brings us to where Apple will cost cutting. For starters, Apple will be squeezing component supplies and offering a much less sophisticated battery set-up, all in the hopes of reducing the cost per unit of the iPhone 12 and the Pro variant.
This will cause a 10 percent reduction in battery capacities across the new range, as compared to the iPhone 11 line-up. Even more puzzling, the new iPhone will likely need the battery horsepower to function the higher power consumption of 5G. I guess, Apple is banking on its newest and coolest A 14 chip to carry the weight and perform feats of power efficiency previously only ever dreamed of.
The tech titan is also choosing to scrap the ProMotion displays on the Pro models.
It might not sound it but on the upside, there are things to look forward to. The A 14 chip could be a real gamechanger, the new chasis design looks interesting, as well as the huge new screen sizes should offer consumers something different. At least Apple has to finally work for our money!
Delayed for a while now, Apple has not given us a definitive release date on its latest flagship but an educated guess tells us it will likely be next year. All I can say is there is a lot to hold out for!
