Samsung’s Galaxy Fold was somewhat of a mystery considering that it was both a failure and success at the same time. A failure, because of the sheer staggering amount of issues that came with it at after the media got their hands on the device. But a success, because they’re now saying that the Samsung have sold 1 million units of the foldable phone. This comes from TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin, where Samsung Electronic’s President Young Sohn revealed how many they’ve sold since it’s release.

“And I think that the point is, we’re selling [a] million of these products,” Sohn said.

“There’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000.”

At Disrupt Berlin, they mainly talked about growth through innovation of products. He goes on to explain Samsung’s process of releasing products for the sole purpose of getting feedback. He said that if they kept devices like the Fold in labs, they wouldn’t get the input they needed. Which honestly, makes sense. It would most probably be biased, and plenty of real life use cases wouldn’t have been thought of. For example, the film protruding from the screen which people were pulling on. They couldn’t have thought people would do that?

And as Sohn mentioned, the phone retails for $2000 worldwide. In Malaysia, the Galaxy Fold goes for RM 8388, which a hefty price to say the least. That would mean Samsung made RM 8,388,000,000 just on the Galaxy Fold alone. Isn’t that insane?? Like the heck?? Well that’s my rather rudimentary math, so there might be things I’m not taking into account, but based on what he’s said, that’s the reality.

And the craziest part of it? He was asked at Disrupt Berlin if Samsung was comfortable selling a $2000 device which is essentially a beta device, and Sohn said yes, and pointed to the sales number as justification. He ain’t wrong, but it does serve a grim reminder into the capitalist society that we live in. Even a device that was essentially on a trial run, could make that much money. The world’s crazy man.
