Review: OPPO Find X

Forward Innovation

When OPPO revealed its plans to move up the innovation ladder with its all-new OPPO Find X, it also confirmed a couple of key changes. Firstly – and this was expected – it is gunning for the leading role. It took the Chinese smart device vendor a long time in research and development to achieve this goal; many, MANY years to be exact. The wait is truly worth the time spent as OPPO can now, proudly and with gusto, declare its opening salvo to all comers in the top-end flagship segment.

Flawless Design

Mention any reference to OPPO, and the first reaction is to label it as a mid-range player. For those knowledgeable, they might even refer to the past efforts OPPO has in the audio-visual space. These are big feathers for the hat and, with the OPPO Find X, another new achievement is now on the cards. The truly seamless design, sans the side-frame buttons and notch, is one of a kind. The unified look and the subtle gradient on the back is wholly OPPO. However, there are two things that break the flawless look – the USB Type-C port and camera array platform. Even so, the entire device is ultra-sleek, hence the name: Panoramic Arc Screen.

Ferocious Performance

To reinforce its fighting words, AKA strong statement of no notch necessary – the hardware must be equally as awesome. Indeed, roaring within the dual-glass with metallic sideframe chassis are top-end specs. Using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with Adreno 630, 8GB RAM, and 256GB storage, this is the best configuration for any flagship currently. While the competition sports similar innards, OPPO puts in its own optimisations to ensure the OPPO Find X always runs at its max potential. From booting up, loading a ton of apps, running 4K and live content, multi-tasking, and running games with heavy demands; nothing slowed down this OPPO powerhouse.

For Gamers

Let us talk about gaming on the OPPO Find X for a bit. Like all flagships, this next-gen entry sports the bells and whistles that all are now expecting from a top-tier smartphone. Dual speakers flank the 6.42” AMOLED panel, promising a decent sound stage that adds some level of immersion for movies. More critical for this flagship is the Game Space app. This is what sets apart this premium entry from OPPO with the rest. The Game Space platform is a gamer focus aspect that always optimises the OPPO Find X before a game is loaded up. Clearing the RAM, re-routing processing capabilities, and blocking notifications and calls – Game Space ensures the device will always offer a smooth gaming experience.

Frontier Pursuit

Beyond enriching the multimedia and gameplay experience, OPPO is also gunning to be a system design innovator. The Stealth 3D Cameras system is truly one-of-a-kind due to how it is deployed when in use. Once the motorised platform pops up, the back-facing dual-lens sharp-shooter – featuring a 16MP and 20MP lenses – come into play. With some level of artificial intelligence, the rear-mount snappers can identify 800 scene modes and provide intuitive assistance. Of course, real world use isn’t always accurate. In well-lit situations, pictures turn out exceptionally vivid and switching to macro or food takes less than a second. Low-light photography is not as good however and switching to Expert Mode is highly recommended. As for the 25MP front-loaded shooter, it works well enough.

Formidable Entry

Many have questioned the need for a motorised dock for cameras. Even more wonder why OPPO didn’t even consider other biometrics system (face unlock, PIN and/or password are the only way in). Personally, cutting out the fingerprint sensor is a both good and bad. In positive light, it proves vendors don’t have to be traditional. At the same time, it isn’t wise for OPPO to make this call. The fingerprint scanner could be embedded in the power button. Even so, the 3D Structured Light Technology that OPPO Find X uses is not to be overlooked. Testing in a completely dark room, the device is still able to accurately scan and unlock the device. This is all thanks to the advanced array of sensors that sit alongside the front camera. All in all, this next-gen OPPO flagship is a force to be reckoned with.
