Nuha Bahrin Emerges As U Mobile’s Campus Grooves Challenge Champion In An Exhilarating Grand Finale

The Grand Finals for U Mobile’s Campus Grooves Challenge brought an end to an arduous nationwide search for the country’s next big talent. With a roadshow that spanned over 20 campuses throughout Malaysia and over 300 auditions over the course of five months, the stage was set for a thrilling Grand Finale and boy, did it deliver.

With a jam packed agenda spanning as early as 8am onwards, the Grand Finale was the perfect platform for the winning groups from each campus, along with the 3 golden buzzer winners, to strut their performances and show everyone the raw talent that got them to the finals in the first place.

Kicking off the show was a speech from Head of Segment Marketing for U Mobile, Mimi Wong, who reiterated U Mobile’s commitment to unearthing raw talent.

“In late 2019, U Mobile launched the Campus Grooves Challenge, going to 20 campuses in West Malaysia over the course of 5 months in the hopes of unearthing raw talents hidden amongst the students.”

With the speech done and dusted, actor/singer Naim Daniel opened the show, blowing away the crowd with his great stage persona and engaging performance of two songs, Only U and Adakah Engkau Menungguku. With the opening act out of the way, the participating acts took centre stage, each with the hopes of leaving a lasting impression on special judges Sasi the Don – a producer and also known as the ‘Reggae Ambassador of Asia’, Zain Hamid – ‘Malaysia R&B singer and an actor’ ,and Zara Delisha from The National Department For Culture And Arts of Malaysia.

Needless to say, all 23 performances blew the judges away, giving all three of them a tough time with the selection of the Top 8. Alas, the show had to go on, and Noel Abienego from UMP Pahang, Nayli Azmi from UNITEN Kajang, Marlisa Arif of UNITAR Kelana Jaya, Chubby Band of ASWARA, BAMNIP of ASWARA, UDC of UTAR Sungai Long, The Duo from SEGi College Penang and Nuha of Multimedia University Cyberjaya were chosen to progress to the final round and edge an inch closer to the grand prize of RM5,000.00

With the Top 8 performers knowing what’s at stake, each one gave a final performance that would have made a certain British producer proud. Whilst the judges were tabulating the marks, Insomniaks gave a stunning closing act performance, complete with their famous song ‘Pulang’. After a lengthy deliberation from the judges, Nuha Bahrin of Multimedia University Cyberjaya emerged as the champion for her amazing rendition of ‘Hurt’ by Christina Aguilera. Coming in at second place was Marlisa Arif, with Nayli Azmi bagging third. They walk home with RM5,000.00,  RM3,000.00 and RM1,000.00 respectively.

The rest of the Top 8 didn’t go home empty handed. They each bagged an RM500.00 consolation prize, with two of the top 8 performers even winning the Grand Lucky Draw prize of an iPhone 8.

“I am still in shock. Like, I can’t believe I made it all the way! To be honest, I was already happy with being a part of the Top 8 but to actually win the whole thing, I did not expect it. This is my first time winning something this big!!”

-Nuha Bahrin, CGC 2019 Champion

With that, U Mobile’s Campus Grooves Challenge comes to a thrilling conclusion. It’s safe to say that the crowd here today at PJ Live Arts, Jaya One witnessed a showcase of young talents unlike anything they’ve ever seen here in Malaysia, with some among them already excited for Season 2 of U Mobile Campus Grooves Challenge.

“Came here to support my buddies from Aswara and I honestly expected it to be just another talent show but honestly, I am blown away by how much fun I had at the Grand Finals. There was so much to do and the performances made me feel like I was at a concert. Hopefully there’s one more next year.. Maybe i’ll join this time haha”

-Nizam from ASWARA
