Coronavirus: Malaysians Left Stranded In Wuhan As Evacuation Flight Lands In KLIA Missing 34 People

It’s been a little over a month since the Wuhan Coronavirus outbreak and while it turns out the mortality rate for the virus isn’t as bad as we had first thought, there’s been a total of 20,629 confirmed cases worldwide with 427 deaths. This week marked the first two cases of deaths outside China, a 44-year old man from The Philippines who had just returned to the country from Wuhan and a 39-year old man from Hong Kong, who had underlying health problems.

As we learn more and understand the virus a little better, countries all around the world are evacuating it’s citizens from the epicentre of the outbreak. Malaysia too, has followed suit and an Air Asia Aircraft was deployed to Wuhan yesterday to do just that.

The plane, which set out to bring home all 167 Malaysians, their foreign spouses and children, left KLIA yesterday carrying 500,000 gloves as a gesture of aid from the Malaysian government and landed back in KLIA at 5.57am this morning, but with only 133 passengers on board.

It turns out that 34 Malaysians ended up missing their flights out of China after failing to get to the airport in time for the flight.

“According to Wisma Putra, a number of Malaysians who were supposed to be on the flight were unable to leave Wuhan due to logistical problems.

“The main reason is that they are outside Wuhan city and it is difficult to get transport to head into the city or the airport,”

National Disaster and Management Agency (Nadma)

The 133 passengers that did make it home will be put under quarantine for a period of 14 days as health officials monitor them closely for any signs of the virus. No news yet on the fate of the 34 still stuck in Wuhan but hopefully we sort it out ASAP for the sake of their loved ones back home.
