Intel has end the 20 year run of the IDF – Intel Developers Forum. That includes the planned IDF17 this year.
Intel posted that announcement on their website, announcing that the entire program is ending.
IDF has traditionally been where Intel’s major product announcements take place, including CPU announcements life Skylake and Kaby Lake, as well as storage products like Optane, and networking fabrics like Omni-Path.
Understandably, it’s difficult to streamline all the different segments into a single trade show. Although it’s not sure whether there’ll be a different format of trade shows, looks like developers interested in attending Intel’s show might have to wait and see.
According to AnandTech, Intel has been “changing from a PC-centric company to a data-centric company.”
“With the rise of AI, FPGAs, Optane, IoT, wireless comms, automotive, and the other new areas that Intel is moving into, Intel felt that IDF no longer fills the need when it comes to giving out information. As a result, the decision has been made to find new ways to communicate with the audience (media, developers and companies) and the ecosystem with targeted events… So rather than have one big melee on everything, Intel is set to split its message across several different areas in the hope that it accurately digs deep enough into every area.”

You can expect to find Intel bringing amazing experiences to life in new, more modern ways across variety of exciting venues, as well as industry conferences, partner events and smaller proprietary events.”
The days of Intel showcasing their latest technology at their premier industry event is now over. All eyes now are focused to other trade shows such as Computex, CES and MWC in the upcoming years. Thank you very much IDF.
