Looks like there IS such a thing as bad publicity

After what seems like decades of hype, Huawei have finally launched the P30 series locally in an event that was probably quite good. We wouldn’t really know. You see, we weren’t invited.

Following a train wreck of a promo campaign where Huawei not only removed all doubt that they’re shady as hell but also displayed just how insecure they are, the P30 series is finally here! That’s great news for two reasons. One being that consumers will finally be able to test out the amazing camera for themselves and two being that we no longer have to receive redundant press releases from Huawei desperately trying to hype the series. I mean, you know it’s bad when the release of new themes is considered news worthy.

That being said, Huawei Malaysia is not happy with us.. or at least they’re not happy with their PR company.. or maybe it’s their PR company that is not happy with us. It’s one of the above. Realistically though, it’s probably all of the above. That last one is especially true seeing as they were unhappy enough with our coverage to not risk inviting us to the launch.

I suppose having control over the narrative is how they’ve made their name over the years and that’s quite alright. It’s their prerogative to react to bad press however they want. I would suggest taking a page from this book though. Antagonizing the media isn’t always a good idea.

Isn’t the media supposed to keep corporations responsible?

The fact of the matter is, while our coverage has been negative of late, nothing we write about the company is hearsay or based on rumours. Huawei have been treating consumers like 5-year olds for a while now, to the point where it’s almost becoming a yearly tradition for them to get caught doing something incredibly stupid. They have had employees arrested on spying charges, the CFO of the company really was caught with 3 Apple devices at the time of her arrest and more recently, Microsoft really did find a vulnerability in Huawei’s software (though to be fair to them, they patched it immediately).

The issues that plague Huawei are very much real and their approach of ignoring reality is symptomatic of their beta mentality. I thought the marketing department was the problem but it’s becoming increasingly obvious that it’s their mentality that’s the issue here. Luckily for them, there are books for that.

Combat self-doubt- check! Stop Comparing yourself to others- check! Break out of your rut- check!

P30 Series pricing

The P series will be available in Malaysia starting from the 6th of April. The P30 will be come in just the 6GB+128GB variation and is priced at RM 2699 while the P30 Pro is available in two variations, 8GB+256GB and 8GB+512GB, which is priced at RM3799 and RM4399 respectively.

While there’s about a 28% difference in pricing for the devices, the P30 with the specs it has, feels like only half the phone the P30 pro is. But i guess only time will tell if that is true.
