Thanks to Asus, professional overclocker ‘der8auer’ has managed to push an i7-7700K processor to 7.2GHz!
The Intel Core i7-7700K is currently the consumer-grade class leader, costing around RM1600 here. It has a base clock of 4.2GHz, but has a turbo clock of 4.5GHz.
Asus flew der8auer to Taiwan as part of their Absolute Zero event. There they supplied liquid helium, which cost 40 Euros per litre but has a temperature of -269 degrees celsius. In comparison, liquid nitrogen costs just 40 cents per litre! But for extreme overclockers, the temperature advantage is worth the added cost, and liquid nitrogen is 70 degrees celsius warmer.
der8auer didn’t even need to disable Hyper-Threading to achieve his record of 7328MHz. In just 15 minutes, over 100 litres of liquid helium was spend on this.
