Google Cancels I/O Developer Event Amid Concerns Of Coronavirus Outbreak; No Pixel 4a?

Google has formally announced that they’ll be cancelling their I/O developer conference this year, with the coronavirus outbreak still rampant. The event was scheduled to take place between May 12th to 14th, so it’s no surprise considering the amount of other tech events and conferences that’ve been cancelled thus far.

“Due to concerns around the coronavirus (COVID-19), and in accordance with health guidance from the CDC, WHO, and other health authorities, we have decided to cancel the physical Google I/O event at Shoreline Amphitheatre,” said Google in a blog post noting the cancellation.

Google’s I/O Keynote event is their biggest news event of the year. This is where they introduce the new changes coming to Android, their hardware, and other updates and features they’ll be implementing in their services for the year. They even announced the Google Pixel 3a last year at the event, so safe to say, the coronavirus has put a damper in Google’s plans for 2020.

They probably are going to opt for an online-event, so we’ll still see what Google have got cooking up, and I’m especially excited to see the Pixel 4a. But till then, we’re going to have to wait it out. They do mention that they’re figuring things out for the I/O event and “over the coming weeks, we will explore other ways to evolve Google I/O to best connect with our developer community.”

Like I said, this wasn’t especially surprising considering the other events that’ve cancelled as of late. Even MWC 2020 was cancelled, as well as a whole host of events and companies pulling out/canceling plans. It’s disappointing, but what else could we do when the world is facing a outbreak?
