Broforce is not a new game, existing as an Early Access game first and released in October 2015. With game developer, Free Lives Games, constantly releasing updates and adding new content, Broforce is evergreen, just like the 1980s and 1990s action films it pays homage to.

Hey, Bro

The game is a 2D run-and-gun platformer, where up to four players can play as one of 36 (as of the 4th of July update) unlockable bros, a parody of hyper-masculine action heroes with the addition of “Bro” in their names (e.g., Rambro, The Brominator, Brobocop).

Players are tasked with eliminated opposing terrorist forces that threaten the bro way of life. Gameplay is fast and violent with death just a stray bullet away. To aid the bros in their campaign against terror, each bro is equipped with their own unique arsenal. Rambro has his machine gun while Comandbro has rocket launchers. No two bros are alike and players have to adapt their play style to the bro they are controlling.

This mechanic is made even more interesting because players can rescue prisoners of war during a level, this nets them an extra life but also switches their bro to a different Broforce character. The random factor adds a great sense of anticipation every time you rescue a POW.

Epic Destruction

While the characters of Broforce seem to be the stars of the show, the real gem is actually the game’s destructible environment. The sprite graphics and animation in this game are really well done and often times, I found myself delightfully surprised as to what objects my character could interact with.

Almost everything you see in the level can be destroyed and this can cause some very violent chain reactions which may or may not be in the player’s favour. This allows for some rather creative ways to clear a level.

Don’t expect one method to always work though, as the enemies in Broforce all fit the terrorist henchmen tropes and will keep players on their toes. Boss fights on the other hand can be a drawn out affair due to the sheer size of the bosses. In single-player mode, I found boss fights to be incredibly tough and frustrating which brings me to my next point, multiplayer.

Bros Unite

Broforce is a great couch multiplayer game due to the sheer ridiculousness of the game. Online multiplayer is great as well but I found the experience slightly lacking when playing on public servers. As a local multiplayer, it’s wonderful and because Broforce is easy to get into, even the greenest of players can have fun.

All in all, Broforce is a blast with its colourful, well-animated sprite graphics, ridiculous over the top violence, a colourful cast of bros and enough goons to satisfy your bloodlust. If you were looking for a good game to play with some friends over the weekend or just a game to blow off some steam, Broforce really is the game for you.
