iPhone and iPad users have recently voiced their suspicion that the Facebook app is draining their battery life even with background app refresh disabled. Facebook has confirmed not long ago that it has found part of the source of the problem.
Ari Grant, Facebook’s engineering manager, has posted on the site that the company found two issues that it is looking to fix; the ‘CPU spin’ and ‘audio sessions’ that stay open.
CPU spin keeps pushing out app queries without getting any response back. Quoting Grant, it’s like a child who keeps asking ‘Are we there yet?’ with absolutely no progress to reaching the destination.
Another issue the company found occurs when users close the app after watching a video. Some audio sessions will keep on running even though nothing was actually playing, thus draining your phone’s power.
He was quick to point out that these problems have nothing to do with the location services or the optional locationa history feature on the Facebook app. These problems have been addressed and if Facebook follows its strict biweekly app update schedule, then iOS users will be able to get rid of the battery-sucking trouble in a few weeks’ time.
