Dora the Explorer, the kids show on Nickelodeon, was one of my favourite as a child. There was something about it that I found cool about it. The basic premise was Dora would go around finding stuff to do, and then ask your opinion about it. I mean, there was no way she knew what you were saying or what you’d pick, but it sure felt like it to me. I picked up on it pretty quickly that she seemed like a computer program. Check out the opinions of the twitter user above, who had an epiphany about the young explorer.
While that’s all fine and dandy, it makes me think about something. Was Dora the Explorer the very first live streamer? Okay hear me out. Every morning before school I’d get to watch TV. I’d put on Nick because it was my favourite channel, and just watch whatever nonsense Dora and Boots would get into. While it’s recorded, and not live, it might not count.
But because she was practically a program or even a game, we would essentially be watching someone play the game. Even the intro to Dora the Explorer depicts the camera going into the computer program and watching. So maybe the concept of livestreaming has been around for longer than we thought. I mean, check it out below. You might have not realized this yourself yet.
Oh and if you were wondering why I’m thinking about Dora the Explorer, it’s because the trailer for a live action adaptation is out. Yeah, don’t know how to feel about that one.
