It wasn’t too long ago when Digi made public its expansion plan and its current status as the widest 4G LTE network in the country. The telco connects 1 in 2 Malaysians to high-speed internet.

Now, Digi divulges that it has started field tests on Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology on its 4G LTE network. This is a technology that brings voice calls over a 4G LTE connection and is expected to be ready in 2016.

Currently, cellular voice calls are carried over 2G and 3G networks and this slows down internet activity when voicc calls are made.

The higher bandwith of th 4th generation data network makes it ideal to transmit higher fidelity voice calls. VoLTE also features noise cancellation capability but both features will be dependent on the mobile devices used for calls.

With the new technology, customers also can surf the web, download or stream content and make a voice call, all at the same time.

For subscribers without VoLTE capable devices, the 2G and 3G voice calls will still be available.
