The official statement by Samsung Malaysia is that we will see the appearance of Galaxy S7 Edge on March 18th, also only the 32GB edition and not the 64GB. Before you go all fanatic about the lack of storage, if you’re been following the websphere on the latest launch you will also know that Sammy has re-introduced the microSD slot.
Samsung was kind enough of hold a sneak preview of the latest launch which took place at MWC Barcelona just 2 days ago here at KL, media were treated to test out the S7 Edge paired with the Gear VR to experiencing Barcelona on the augmented reality gadget. To say it was like we were there…not really…apart from dizzying after effects ( for me at least) the 360 video did give a parallax view of various scenes including the unboxing of S7 in the conference halls of MWC, some Catalans dancing in the streets, and Goudi’s Gothic Cathedral.
There are many changes incorporate into the S7 Edge from the S6 Edge, holding it we immediately noticed the difference especially…the back. On the S6 Edge the glass panel was indented however on the S7 its flushed against the frame of the phone, giving it a full bodied feel, this keeps the phone firm when held and reduced the slippery effects. Another noticeable change is the back camera which has been made seamless against the glass panel the older version juts out and in some cases easily scratched. The return of the microSD is a welcome addition and during the presentation the crowd were heard jeering to the announcement and what Samsung cleverly did was to double up the slot to works as a hybrid SIM card tray with dual SIM slots what we missed was the lack of removable battery option..
One main feature that Samsung is thumping the chest on is the first Dual Pixel camera which accordingly delivers brighter and sharper images, even in low light. Apparently with revolutionary Dual Pixel technology, brighter lens with wider F1.7 aperture, and bigger pixel, the camera has a faster shutter speed and a more accurate autofocus even in the darkest night. Something Apple has yet to master or just ignores to include in its phones, a feature that nowadays could swing the tide on who reigns supreme in the smartphone war.
Another point to note is coming it at 5.5-inch the Galaxy S7 edge doesn’t look or feel gargantuan like the iPhone 6s Plus, instead it is just slightly bigger than the 5.1″ S6 a feat possible by maximising real estate space, again kudos on this, as we personally are not comfortable with large phones. The new device is constructed with 3D glass and metal with better grip this time around and ergonomic curves to keep it sexy. Dropped in puddle of water or need to take a call in the shower? fret not- water resistant and dust proof feature is back with the new Edge as it is equipped with IP68 rating, with Gore-tex membrane fitted, you dont have to seal the headphone jack and usb holes when you take a dive in the pool
Bigger battery is promised with a capacity of 3,600mAh compared the 2600 on the previous iteration, an enhanced processor and an optimised software ensures longer lasting battery life and high battery performance. Comes with fast wired and wireless charging speed with charging time reduced dramatically. Out of the box the S7 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and from our toying with a good 1 hour, the UI is super smooth, with no heating up thanks to a revolutionary liquid cooling system…yes you heard it right, more on this in our full hands on review.
