Cheaper Broadband After September 30

Looks like there is no compromise on the broadband issue with the new Communications Minister, a local English daily reported that telco’s have been requesting for a deadline extension up to 2 years for the implementation of the new rates and plans, but the good minister has off right rejected the request.

Since taking over, there has been calls by the Minister for the immediate reduction of broadband prices in the country and improve in service and coverage which has been the bane for many. Public have been receiving the shorter end of the stick especially those in the out skirts who are often left out on connectivity due to lack of commercial reason for operators. High speed broadband should be a necessity just like water and electricity which incumbent fibre provider has yet to resolve.

Posting on his Twitter feed, Gobind Deo asked the respective parties to submit their proposals to MCMC by 30 September which were initially suppose to be by 31 August after which citizens can see the prices for broadband coming down and speeds going up. Operators were told to bring down prices by 50% during budget announcement last year but have stalled, claiming they needed more time to sort infrastructure issues. We here at PC.com believe the prices has to be below RM50 for the masses to take up, at this price point a fisherman wont feel the pinch in his livelihood yet be able to provide decent internet for his children.

Gobind also said he will be holding a meeting with all telecommunication company after September 30.
