Thanks to Nokishita and Canon Rumour, we now know that Canon is readying a new mirrorless full-frame camera. The line will have the name EOS-R, and it looks to be a shrunken down DSLR with hints of other mirrorless cameras in its design.

Clearly designed to go against the Nikon Z-series, the EOS-R features a similar design to both the Z-Series and Sony A7 line. There are differences here and there that makes the Canon stand out among its peers. To start, the mount looks to be similar in size to the current EF mount on Canon’s DSLR. It is not backwards compatible however, so Canon is set to launch with the camera some EF lens adapters.

It is significantly smaller than the EOS 5D-series but features similar sensor size. In this case, the sensor is a 30.3 MP beast. Due to the smaller size, the controls of the camera are different than standard DSLR. Firstly, the PASM dial mode is not present. In its place are dials that looks like the one on the EOS M5. Instead of the green LCD display, you get a negative LCD (or is it e-Ink) display on top to show the mode, parameters, and camera info. Just below the display is a rocker switch, that may be the replacement of the PASM mode dial. There is also a flip-out screen at the back, which we hope will have touch.

Alongside the body, Canon will be announcing four native lenses for the EOS-R. The lenses are the RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM, RF 50mm F1.2L USM, RF 28-70mm F2L USM, and the RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM. Three out of the four lenses are L- lenses, signified by the red ring around the body. L-lenses are created for high-end photography applications, so we can expect the EOS-R to be marketed to professional and semi-pro enthusiasts users. There will also be three new lens adapters, to adapt the EOS-R mount to accept EOS EF lenses.
