Canon has just unveiled the new EOS R line of cameras. It features a new mirrorless body design, and a full-frame sensor inside a significantly smaller body than its DSLR brethren.
The EOS R is the first of its line, and the specs list is quite impressive. It boasts a 30.3MP full-frame sensor, behind a new RF lens mount designed for the camera from the ground up while sharing the same diameter. This is because the EOS R has a shorter flange distance when compared to a DSLR. (Info: Flange distance is the distance between the lens and the sensor).
Other features announced include a whopping 5655 selectable Autofocus Points, Canon’s Dual Pixel AF technology, and the latest DIGIC 8 image processor. With supported lenses, the camera can be stopped down up to -6EV, but unfortunately there is no built-in image stabilization. You will have to continue to depend on lens-based stabilization. Canon only included a single memory slot in the body, which supports UHS-II cards.
The camera comes with a native ISO range of 100-40,000; that expands to 50-102,400 when required. The EOS R supports both Canon’s 14-bit CRW Raw format as well as the relatively new C-Raw which promises smaller file sizes. Video for the EOS R tops at 4K30p, so no 60p recording for videographers. The camera can also record 120p footage at 1280 x 720 at 160Mbps bit rate. There is support 10-bit 4:2:2 video over HDMI or record internally at 8-bit 4:2:0. Canon Log is supported right out the box at 8-bit 4:2:2 over HDMI or 4:2:0 internally.
Alongside the camera, Canon announced four lenses and three adapters. The Canon RF 28-70mm F2L USM, RF 50mm F1.2L USM, RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM and RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM joins the already expansive lens line-up Canon has on offer. The four lenses covers a generous 24-105 focal length, while the three adapters – Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R offers compatibility with EOS EF lenses already in the market.
The EOS R will be available starting from October with a body-only price of USD 2,299 (~RM 9,539) or bundled with the 24-105mm F4L lens for USD 3,399 (~RM 14,103). The lenses and adapters will carry the following sticker prices:
