Amidst concerns of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) implementation this month, a sliver of good news came for mobile prepaid users in Malaysia.

Minister of Finance Lim Guan Eng announces that Malaysians will not have to pay SST for mobile prepaid services. The statement revealed that all prepaid services by telco companies are to be exempt from the newly implemented tax. Enforcement of the exemption will begin 6 September 2018.

In line with the statement, Celcom Axiata Berhad announces that it welcomes the government’s decision. “Mobile communications has become an integral part of daily life. As such, this decision will make a positive impact on many Malaysian prepaid mobile users,” says Mohamad Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad.

Celcom provided tax rebates to Malaysian customers who purchased prepaid plans from 1 to 5 September 2018. The rebates comes in the form of on-net call freebies. On the other hand, 6% SST still applies for non-Malaysians and other Celcom services.
