Just as the ink on the Mobileye acquisition dries, Intel together with newly purchased venture that’s set to propel the chipmaker into the autonomous territory will be launching the first fleet of test cars by end year.

Mobileye now an Intel company, will start building a fleet of fully autonomous level 4 SAE (mostly automated without human intervention, level 5 being the highest) vehicles for testing in the United States, Israel and Europe. The first vehicles will be deployed later this year, and the fleet will eventually scale to more than 100 automobiles.

Various geographical regions were identified to test the vehicles to understand diverse driving styles as well as different road conditions and signage. The test vehicles will combine proprietary capabilities from both companies including computer vision, sensing, fusion, mapping and driving policy along with open compute platforms,  expertise in data center and 5G communication technologies to deliver a “car-to-cloud” system.

The fleet will include multiple car brands and vehicle types to demonstrate the technology’s agnostic nature.
