Not so merry this Xmas day, the patent war between the largest mobile phone makers in the world has no means of subsiding, after US Federal Court made Samsung pay $548 million from the $1 billion payment issued by the law makers, Apple is requesting an additional $179 million in supplemental damages and interest.
The saga started in 2012 when Apple took Samsung to the court rooms for patent infringement of its popular iPhones, accusing the Korean chip maker of using them in the Galaxy smartphones. As you can see the battle has been going on for more than 3 years and there is no sign of both company’s making a truce even though both need each other for their business (Samsung continues to supply A9 chips for the popular iPhones) The new damages seeked by Apple is for what ensued after the verdict was rendered, the guilty Samsung phones were still on sales, on this case the justice court decided to award damages based on each type of model per unit basis, it was a catch 22 situation for Samsung then and they had to keep the stocks at retail, removing them before the verdict would tantamount to admission of guilt.
In financial terms for both these guys are insignificant, the amount would not be enough to pay the top lawyers engaged to handle the case for over 3 years and still goes on the payroll, but its more a matter of ego which both of them have banked in tons of!
