YouTube Premium is finally in Malaysia, so get ready to watch videos with NO ADS. That’s right, you can do that now, but for the low low price of RM17.90/month, but you can get a 4-month free trial. Please do notice the sarcastic undertones when I said low price of RM 17.90 a month. Because besides the ad free video streaming, I’m not really interested in the rest. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s see what all it has to offer in the first place.
Now, besides the RM17.90/month plan, you can get the family plan priced at RM 26.90/month, which allows up to 5 family members in your household, but you get only a 1-month free trial.
So, what else does it come with?
The Extras
Besides not having to watch another Olymptrade ad ever again, you can also save videos and playlists offline on mobile devices. That’s an alright addition to the lineup, but the more interesting part is that you’ll be able to play videos in the background, when you’re on another app or even when you lock your phone. Basically what we all were doing with a jailbroken iPod in 2013.
Included in the deal, is YouTube Music. Which is another reason you might want to start paying for YouTube. You’ll be able to listen to millions of songs that you can find on YouTube, and download it offline for mobile. And finally of course, you can get the whole library of YouTube Originals with shows made for YouTube, by YouTubers. It really isn’t all that enticing when you take into account that you can get other content on YouTube anyway.
So, who is it for?
Really, it’s for anyone who’s sole entertainment platform is YouTube. Because rationally, the no ads is the only thing that could get me to YouTube Premium, but even then it’s a hard sell. YouTube Originals haven’t really taken off the way they wanted to, and I’m not surprised. It kinda segments a YouTuber’s market and audience into paid/free viewers, which hasn’t really gone all too well for them.
I can’t recommend unless there’s stuff you wanna see from your favourite YouTuber’s Originals content, or you wanna background videos, or no ads. It really depends. But for me, it’s just another subscription I’d have to pay for, and what I get in return, doesn’t really justify the purchase all that well. It’s a case of too little, too late.
