Why Samsung’s A80 Might Revolutionise Future Smartphone Designs

The Samsung A80 is one of the more exciting prospects in the mid tier range of devices this year. The phone was announced by Samsung recently, and is coming to Malaysia soon. The main feature of the phone is of course, the Rotating Rear Camera. Which essentially means that your rear cam, is also conveniently your selfie camera. While it’s not the first ever to do it, they’re the first to do it well, at least in my eyes. With a rotating cam, there’s no need for a notch, and I feel a bit more confident of the mechanical aspects of this turning, rather than a pop up camera setup like Vivo’s V15 Pro, or the Xiaomi Mi 9T.

I’m not exactly sure why, but there’s something about this setup that I just find a little more solid than pop up cameras. It’s probably because there’s a bigger area that is ‘rotating’ rather than a single, small unit popping up that could snap. They’ve been smart to introduce features like fall detection, so the camera is smart enough to retract itself when it feels like the phone is falling. But I’m not sure how it’d work with the A80.

But with current trends in mind, this form factor could be the next ‘pop up cam’, because when the V15 Pro came out, many other manufacturers followed suit. Maybe this could spur on other companies to create a device with similar mechanics. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised.

The Samsung A80 is reportedly going to be available for RM 2299-2499, making it the most expensive in Samsung’s A series lineup.

No official word on pricing, but we’ll update the article when we get the information.

The Samsung A80 will feature a 6.7″ FHD+ Super AMOLED display, 48MP main camera, Ultra wide 8MP camera, and 3D Depth camera. It also has 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage, 3700 mAh battery, and an onscreen fingerprint sensor. Safe to say other than the camera, the phone is quite well equipped.
