Earlier this month, WhatsApp announced and rolled out a new feature to help stop the spread of misinformation by limiting forwards to only one contact at a time. This would’ve limited the number of people receiving forwarded messages that most probably contain false information pertaining to the coronavirus.

After the announcement, WhatsApp have confirmed that there’s been a positive impact on their platform in two weeks. In a statement, WhatsApp says they saw a 70 percent reduction in the number of highly forwarded messages. WhatsApp considers messages forwarded more than five times to be a “highly forwarded” message.

“WhatsApp is committed to doing our part to tackle viral messages. We recently introduced a limit to sharing “highly forwarded messages” to just one chat. Since putting into place this new limit, globally there has been a 70% reduction in the number of highly forwarded messages sent on WhatsApp. This change is helping keep WhatsApp a place for personal and private conversations.”

It’s a welcome statistic to read considering the obnoxious amount of forwarded messages people send out a day. Many a time, these facts are uncorroborated and can only do harm with informing people on false information. But hey, at the very least, Facebook-owned WhatsApp is doing something to curb the spread of misinformation. That’s a plus.
