Now that iPhone 8 and X is out, Apple has announced the reduction in price for the iPhone 6, 6S, 7 and 7 Plus by US$100 to US$50, so the question on iPhone users of previous iteration mind is whether to get the discounted models or wait for the new version.

While the discount dished out by Cuppertino seemed generous (for them), for most of us the price is still not compelling, a RM400 of a RM4000 smartphone is still expensive. Apple Malaysia now lists the iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black at RM3849 (128GB) down from RM4299 and as for the the new iPhone 8 Plus 64GB will retail at approx. RM3355. Barring the storage capacity the price does not make sense, does a colour make a difference?

These are premium phones targeted for those who have thick wallets, if they can afford an Apple they are probably not going to be enticed by meager discounts. A status symbol around Asia, premium devices are like the iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 with all their bells and whistles are predominantly purchase by the rich and upper echelons. It’s only when telco’s offer the monthly contract plans that the common folks are able to get their worn out palms on the glossy devices.

So when the new prices for the old models were splashed on the stage at the spanking spaceship looking Apple headquarters in California where everyone gathered were cheering and clapping, I found it unconvincing. For those who can afford and have been using iPhone 6 or 7, there is no need to waste your money with the discounts, I suggest you get the iPhone 8 or Plus. But if you need to sell your kidney to fulfill your desires, please don’t!… and use your hard earned ringgit for a car down payment that you need for your first job or pay up on the outstanding college fees.

…And don’t get me started with iPhone 10!
