The winning shot was a stunning photograph of a mosque resting on the banks of Lake Puchong Perdana at sunrise, the tangerine sky ever so slightly runs its streams of sheen over the golden dome of the structure with the surface of the water acting as a mirror reflecting the splendid moment.

This captivating image was taken by Jamaliah Binti Mohd Yasin a mother, grandmother and now an avid photographer. Jamaliah is also visually impaired whose condition is classified as B1 – total visual impairment, but using the Huawei smartphone with AI feature, the enthused grandma recognised objects she was taking from the image recognition sensor of the device, which then relayed back to her via voice feedback enabling her to take pictures of objects she desires. The feature on the device can give this community a sense of awareness of their surroundings and even participating just like the rest of us do.

This awareness campaign was part of Huawei’s Next-Image Photography Awards program, a global competition exploring images taken using mobile devices for the visually obstructed. After a three-month long campaign involving 10 Sensory Photography classes, the inaugural “AI as the Eyes” CSR campaign closed with the images being on display at Sunway Pyramid.

Jamaliah received a certificate and a Huawei Mate 20 for her work while other participants from the Malaysian Association for the Blind completed the Sensory Photography classes received certificates of completion. Grand Prize winner of the competition, Michał Wesołek, an imagemaker from Poland, used the Mate 20 Pro for his impressive photos.
