Four friends – Wong Zhe Jia Fook, Choong Yong Jie, Liew Chi Hoe and Lian Wei Kang collaborated to put an end to the age-old problem faced by students in most universities.
Recalling his life as a student, Wong Zhe Jia Fook shared the troubles that students had to go through in order to print their assignments and thesis.
“As advanced as it gets, going cashless for example, you will still need to sit down at a computer and print out your work. Also not to forget, the queue during the exam season at the end of each semester. We are eliminating all the hassle by reducing the process into an app and QR code,” said Wong Zhe.
He is the Director of PRINTcess Printing, a growing app-based automated printing service.
PRINTcess was first launched in July 2018 at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Sungai Long Campus. Within the first three weeks, it gained more than 1,500 users in the campus.
After uploading and paying through the app, just scan the QR code at any PRINTcess printer.
Wong Zhe and his team were confident with the outcome and decided to expand their service to other universities. Up till January 2019, PRINTcess has made its way to UTAR Kampar Campus, UCSI University, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), New Era University College and Kolej Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR UC).
Other than universities, PRINTcess is also eyeing to penetrate convenience stores, petrol stations and eventually expand nationwide as well as South East Asia in five years. Offering a kickstart for the start-up was Unovate Centre. The centre provides facilities and test-bed for UTAR students to try out their entrepreneurial ideas.
The system that Wong Zhe’s team created can also be used in the office to monitor printing activities in a company. This will allow the company to track and analyse the usage of printer, down to the number of
printed papers of every staff, simultaneously discouraging the misuse of printing machines at the workplace.
“For now we are offering PRINTcess to the universities in West Malaysia. We will do the installation and it can start operating within three days. We will also provide the printing machines and the publicity will be our responsibility. All they need to provide is the space for the printing machine, electrical power points and two IP addresses,” Wong Zhe said.

According to Wong Zhe, one of the main challenges was having to deal with organisations who struggle to accept their ideas due to their existing system. However, Wong Zhe claimed that the system they offer is indeed the way for companies to move ahead in integrating technology in the office.
