This Japanese Billionaire Is Giving Away 9 Million USD On Twitter

Yes, you read that right.

Eccentric Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, who made his fortune by turning his passion for fashion into an empire is legitimately giving away ¥1 billion JPY (or approximately $9 million USD) to 1000 people in what is probably the most charitable social experiment we’ve seen in a while. The tech mogul and former indie rock musician took to Twitter to make the announcement this week, with the only condition for eligibility being that users would have to retweet the announcement before midnight on the 7th of January.

So, yes.. if you’re only just finding out about this, unfortunately you’re no longer eligible to win. If it makes you feel better, his tweet managed to garner 4.5 million retweets so your odds would’ve been like.. well, really low (0.0002% or something??). With 1000 people set to be chosen, the total amount each person will get adds up to about ¥1 million JPY (US$9100).  Winners will be determined via lottery and Maezawa himself will personally notify them via direct message within two to three days.

In an announcement on YouTube, the founder of Zozotown called the contest a “serious social trial” to see if money can actually buy a persons happiness. He went on to claim that the winners are free to use the money in whatever way they please but they’d have to answer regular questionnaires about how they’re using it.

Unsurprisingly, this isn’t the first time that Maezawa has done something like this. Just last year he did the same thing by promising 100 million yen to be shared among 100 Twitter users. That tweet ended up breaking the record for most retweeted tweet ever, with 4.68 million retweets.

We suggest following the dude, just in case he’s feeling generous next year.
