With the recent announcement from Samsung on their new phone, the Fold, and the Huawei Mate X as previously reported on Liveatpc.com. The idea of the Foldable smartphone is coming to reality, when it was just an idea not so long ago, more and more companies are adapting the form factor.
The basic premise of the form factor is a bigger and better screen, and the convenience to hold it in one hand. It’s a tablet you can put in your pocket. The Samsung Fold comes in at a 4.6 inch outer screen, and a 7.3 inch interior screen. The phone folds out to show the interior screen.
The Huawei Mate X folds outwards and almost wraps around of itself to form a smaller a screen. When fully opened, it reveals an 8-inch display, in the closed form, the front screen is 6.6 inches, while the back screen is 6.38 inches.
However, Samsung and Huawei aren’t the only one in the running with their foldable phones. Earlier this year, Xiaomi released a video of CEO Lin Bin playing around with a foldable phone, which folded in itself twice from both sides, in comparison to the Huawei Mate X which folds around, and the Samsung Fold which opens up to show a bigger screen. Xiaomi as of writing, has not formally announced any foldable phones.
Another company worth of note is Royole which at CES this year teased the Royole Flexpai in an attempt to be first to market with their foldable form factor. However has proved to seem lackluster, but we can expect more news and details from all of these companies in Mobile World Congress Barcelona right now.
