Apple’s devices have been notorious for controlling essentially every and anything about the ecosystem. This includes the apps they use (or forced to) and the experiences users have with them. But now, according to a report from Bloomberg, this could be changing.

Apparently, Apple is considering allowing users to choose their preferred mail and browser apps. Which essentially means you don’t have to be restricted to having Apple force you to use the Safari browser and Mail app by default. Mainly because when you click on a link, or even an email address on an iPhone, you’ll be sent to the corresponding applications. Even if you have Chrome or Gmail installed, it will force the process to be completed in Apple’s own ecosystem.

This is also a thing with Apple’s music/streaming services. They’re considering letting third-party apps like Spotify stream on their HomePods. This also includes letting users set third-party music apps like Spotify to just be the default music app when launched by Siri, Apple’s digital assistant.

However, all this being said, actually seeing any of this implemented is another question. I very highly doubt they would considering that the ecosystem and trapping people in it, is one of Apple’s strengths. There’s a reason they’re on top (for the most part) and this is part of it. I’m unsure if they will, but if they do, I’m going to assume some external forces have gotten them there.
