Broadband plans have been drastically coming down after Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission started engaging with local operators in ensuring consumers get the best speeds at the lowest possible price.

Maxis,TM, Celcom and TIME have all initiated exercise to offer more affordable plans while increasing high speed broadband speeds. What used to cost above the RM100 mark for a meager 30Mbps customers can now get 100Mbps for RM99. The government agency was also ticked-off with users still using ADSL lines for internet with the likes of Streamyx offering poor internet experience and wants the upgrade to fibre expedited.

After a meeting today with all the operators, MCMC is pleased with the commitment by the telcos to expand fibre coverage and migrate ADSL users onto newer technology. On the matter of complaints from existing customers who were not allowed to enjoy the new plans, the agency has managed to persuade the telcos to extend the plans across to all with no caveats.

Expect to see more activity in the sector with pressure continue to pile on operators to improve service and bring prices down. Communication Minister Gobind Deo gave hints on possible new entrants and alternative technology for broadband with the entry of Tenaga Nasional and Axiata. We are bound to see more excitement in this space.
