ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has officially broken ground for its STT Johor data centre campus, with the first facility, STT Johor 1, set to support high-performance computing and cloud services. The ceremony was officiated by Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Located in Iskandar Puteri’s Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park, the 22-acre campus has a planned IT load capacity of 120MW, with STT Johor 1 designed for 16MW and expected to be operational by the end of 2026. The facility will integrate with STT Singapore 5 and other regional data centres, enhancing connectivity across Southeast Asia.

“The groundbreaking of STT Johor 1 is a powerful testament of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 in action. More than just a hyperscale data centre, it is a launchpad for innovation, talent development, and sustainable economic growth,” said Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid.

STT GDC is also advancing Malaysia’s green energy goals by engaging renewable energy providers, including Ditrolic Energy, to power STT Johor 1 with low-carbon solutions. The company aims to set a benchmark for energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable data centres.

Additionally, STT GDC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC) to establish a talent pipeline for the data centre industry, aligning with the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

“The STT Johor data centre campus marks a significant milestone for STT GDC in delivering advanced digital infrastructure while fostering local talent development,” said STT GDC Malaysia Country Head Darryll Sinnappa.

Malaysia’s data centre industry is poised for significant growth, with a development pipeline of 1.4GW over the next five years, expected to drive industry revenue to RM3.6 billion by 2025.
