It seems the allure of ride-hailing still lingers as Sony Corp plans to create its own taxi-hailing system. The electronics giant reveals it is toying with the idea and is looking to form a joint venture for it.

According to Reuters, via Nikkei Asian Review, Sony is trying a different approach. With the joint venture, it wants to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) platform for its taxi-hailing system.

Partners for this collaboration will include Motor Transportation, Hinomaru Kotsu, Kokusai Motorcars, Green Cab and the Checker Cab group.

In doing this, it is possible Sony is delving further into AI. In some ways, this feels like an expansion on what it has worked on with its Sony Aibo programme.

If anything, this move further confirms how keen Japanese companies are about AI and the ride-hailing space. Besides Sony, SoftBank Group Corp plans to expand its stake in this innovative platform.
