Snapchat pretty much introduced the world to the wonders of AR filters. Back when the app had first released, it was one of the only places where you could play around with magical filters that alter your appearances. I mean, yeah, we were all super jakun about filters as well but it was new to the market at the time. We all remember how the dog filter took the world by storm, right?
Fast forward a few years down the line and a plethora of apps now come with AR features. In spite of all that though, Snapchat has maintained its relevance by offering its users filters that have a tendency to go viral, it’s gender swap, baby, and Time Machine filters are all testament to that.
The company has now taken it one step further by announcing filters that literally change your world. It’s brand new “Ground Transformation” lens will actually enable you to quite literally play the floor is lava, or even turn the ground into a puddle of water. The lens utilizes machine learning to get the geometry of the land just right before applying special effects.
Based on pictures of the filter, it does look rather realistic. It looks like once again, Snapchat has come up with a filter that people will open the app just to use. You probably won’t have to wait long for Instagram to do what it does best and come up with it’s own version of it though.
