Samsung’s Unpacked event happened today and pretty much everything we expected to happen, happened. The S20 series launched and it looks exactly like how it did in the leaks, with the topline version of the series being an absolute beast of a phone, with an absolute beast of a price too. Samsung launched it’s second foldable device at the event today as well, and while it may have been leaked extensively prior to launch as well, getting a hands on feel of the phone gave tech writers everything they needed to know: That the Galaxy Z Flip is the best foldable smartphone to date.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold was an undeniable disaster and its only legacy is that people now greet foldable smartphones with skepticism. With the Huawei Mate X yet to even launch worldwide, Motorola’s RAZR is the closest thing to a decent foldable smartphone, until now.

For one, the Z Flip comes with superior specs. The device is loaded with a Snapdragon 855 chipset, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. In terms of its camera, there are three in total with two 12MP wide and ultra-wide cameras on the back (or top half) and a 10MP front-facing punch hole camera in the centre of the screen.

But that’s not what’s being raved about. Samsung’s use of a fully flexible glass screen instead of a soft plastic one that they used on the Galaxy Fold is being lauded as revolutionary for the foldable smartphone game. The overall feel of the phone is solid, with Samsung putting a lot of emphasis on the build of the phone. Early hands on reviews of the device all say that same thing: That the hinge is solid and that it is a much more refined product than both the Galaxy Fold and the RAZR.

It’s worth noting though that Samsung made the hinges of the Z Flip really strong to the point where it is difficult to open with one hand. In fact, the phone doesn’t flip open like a conventional clamshell but instead stays in place at whatever angle you open it to until fully opened. Meaning you can leave it half opened on the table should you feel the need for that kind of screen setup for whatever strange reason.

With a price tag of $1380 USD, the phone is the cheapest foldable device out there at the moment so that’s another positive. All of this however, is just based on a half hour hands on. The Motorola RAZR looked promising at it’s launch event as well. All phones look great in a controlled environment and until media outlets get their review units and actually use the device, it’s hard to say if the phone is a hit or miss.
