Another competitor has come out, looking for the title of ‘World’s Slimmest Gaming Laptop’. ROG’s Zephyrus S GX701. I recently got to take a look at the Predator Triton 500, which comes in at 17.9 mm and weighs 2.1kg. So to compare the two seems fair, as they both are claiming to be the thinnest of the thin. The Zephyrus S GX701 actually comes in at 18.7 mm thin, so it doesn’t beat the Predator, but wait, there’s more. The Zephyrus packs a 17 inch display, but keeps a 15 inch design and form factor. Taking this into account, that few mm thickness, is understandable.

To achieve the 17 inch display on a 15 inch body, they had to create small, thin bezels. These bezels are so thin, they couldn’t include a camera together with the laptop, and have opted for an external attachment. It’s kind of a weird thing to think about, but practically it makes sense. How often do you need your webcam anyway?

Zephyrus S GX701 features a 17-inch display with a 144Hz refresh rate, and frames it has super-narrow bezels. It also adds NVIDIA G-SYNC and Optimus technology into the mix. The PANTONE  Validated panel is ideal for immersive gaming and creating content.

The one weird thing about the body, is that space in between the keyboard and screen.

In what looks to be the speaker unit, which is powered by SmartAmp. Their choice to create what seems to be a very squished, and smaller keyboard might not be too great. This will probably take time getting used to, and might not feel as great as a normal sized keyboard.
