Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli announced the launch of a bi-weekly podcast titled “YBM: Yang Bakar Menteri,” scheduled to debut on January 8, 2024.
The podcast is set to serve as a platform for engaging with pro-opposition online activists who often engage in factless arguments.
Rafizi, also the Deputy President of the People’s Justice Party (PKR), expressed his intention to address and challenge online activists who have been critical of the government without factual basis.
Through the podcast, he aims to provide a space for open discussions, inviting these activists to share their perspectives while holding them accountable for the accuracy of their claims.
“They’ll have their chance to ‘roast’ me, and I’ll have a chance to ‘roast’ them,” said Rafizi.
The unique feature of the podcast lies in Rafizi’s commitment to actively seek out these critics, inviting them to participate in face-to-face discussions.
He emphasised that the invitation is open not only to pro-opposition activists but also to academics, government supporters, or regular citizens who wish to engage in meaningful discourse.
“I will find them, invite and allow them an opportunity to face me,” Rafizi said, demonstrating his commitment to open and direct communication with those holding differing views.
Rafizi explained that the choice of a podcast as the medium for these discussions was deliberate, as it avoids the use of public funds.
He noted that appearing on television would involve airtime expenses, and he sought a cost-effective way to encourage meaningful conversations.
The Economy Minister believes that such face-to-face discussions will contribute to a more constructive culture of discourse, moving away from the prevalent trend of petty bickering on the internet.
By creating a platform for fact-based conversations, Rafizi aims to bridge the gap between opposing factions and promote a more informed and nuanced public debate.
As the podcast “YBM: Yang Bakar Menteri” prepares for its debut, it signals a fresh approach by a government official to engage with critics directly, emphasising the importance of evidence-based discussions in shaping public discourse.
