Sony have officially spoken about the Playstation 5, and it’s good. In an exclusive interview with Wired Mark Cerny, who is the Lead system architect at Sony and who designed the new Playstation, gave details about the Next Gen console. And it seems it’s not going to be just and upgraded version of the PS4 Pro. The PS5’s CPU will be based on the third generation AMD’s Ryzen line and contains 8 cores of the 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU will be a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family and also has Ray Tracing support. All in all, it seems like a pretty good deal so far.
Ray tracing is a technique which models the travel of light to simulate complex paths in a 3D environment. This technique hasn’t been adapted into any of the current game consoles out right now, and therefore is kinda exciting. Also, did I mention it’ll be backwards compatible with the PS4? So right off the gate, I’ll have all the games I’ve accumulated throughout the years, and that’s pretty nice.

Not to mention, 8K support on the PS5, will probably make your games look really good. Considering you have an 8K supported TV, that is. Considering there are people who still haven’t upgraded to a 4K compatible monitor/TV (Me included), 8K support seems to be something for the future. And to top it all off, the PS5 will feature a SSD and will definitely help games load faster. Thank God. Right now, Sony haven’t mentioned which exact SSD will be in the machine, but they claim it has a raw bandwidth higher than any SSD available for PCs. Having an SSD is important, it makes game load faster, run better, and overall just have a better experience.
Don’t get too excited yet though, the device definitely isn’t coming out this year, but we’re hoping for a 2020 release date. However, all of this taken into account, the PS5 is shaping to be a different kind of beast. Something we haven’t seen before, and that’s a good thing. But with all this innovation, comes a price. And with everything they’ve talked about so far, makes it seem like the PS5 is going to have a pretty high price.
