Malaysia has been in lockdown since April March, with multiples of 2 weeks extension, we are now in week six with the last day being on April 28. Anxious citizens are awaiting for the Prime Minister’s announcement scheduled to take place later this evening at 8pm if the MCO will be extended or eased further.

When the first restriction was declared Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin went on live television informing the public on the coronavirus situation in the country. The clarion call for all Malaysians to flatten the curve, measures were introduced by the Health Ministry for the public to adhere to. Social distancing, washing hands, and restrict unnecessary movements were some of the instructions given. During the early days of MCO, positive Covid 19 cases peaked at an average of 150-200 but have since come down to 70-50 with 36 being the lowest on record in recent days. Health Deputy General, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah quipped these are good signs that the curve is flattened but if we can reduce it to single digit we would be better off.

While the signs are alluding to a possible recovery in containign the Covid 19 outbreak in the community, health officials have warned of lifting the MCO prematurely can cause the spread to reignite. Businesses on the other hand are pleading for the end of the control as they are severely affected by the lockdown. Tan Sri Muhyiddin will be placed in a uncomfortable position on the rostrum tonight as he shares the sentiment from his cabinet and a likely extension of the MCO as predicted by experts.
