Police Dismantles Smart Key Luxury Car Theft Syndicate

Police have managed to crack down on a gang of robbers who have been targeting luxury cars here in Penang, after conducting multiple raids with 6 men being arrested believed to be involved in the activity.

The gang used sophisticated smart keys and signal blockers and mainly targeted button start cars, its was reported that they were able to get into the cars and switch off the security system within 10 minutes. Chief State Police Datuk Zainol Samah said 6 luxury vehicles worth RM530,000 that were reported stolen have now been found and are known to be responsible in more than 18 missing vehicles cases in the state since early this year.

They mainly target cars parked at industrial zones in Perai and Bayan Baru and usually conduct their operation in day time while the owners were at work. They then brought the cars to a nearby paint shop which is also ran by them and once repainted ,they quickly drove the cars to Danok, across the border. The syndicate used a workshop as the location to keep the stolen vehicles where they then did all the changes of number plates and road tax before smuggling it to be sold to buyers in Danok. They were usually sold for around RM20,000 a vehicle,” added Datuk Zainol. Special forces who raided the facilities also found various number plates, fake road taxes, Touch N Go cards, Smart Tag and smartphones. ”

The top chief had advised employers and workers to be vigilant around the industrial area and to heighten their security system on their vehicles and to event consider adding provisional keys when leaving their cars outside the factory.
